March, Together for the Cause of Epilepsy!

March is Epilepsy Awareness Month. The team and I encourage you to join us in demystifying epilepsy!

People often tell us that epilepsy is rarely discussed. Unfortunately, it remains widely misunderstood, and unfavorable prejudices against individuals living with this neurological disorder persist.

That’s true! As community workers dedicated to epilepsy, we strive daily to combat this lack of understanding. Our daily actions and services focus on prevention, awareness, training, support, tool development, and activity facilitation, across all walks of life and for everyone affected by epilepsy, whether directly or indirectly.

It seems that this is not enough.

March is therefore an ideal time to appeal to you. We seek your involvement with us to make a difference.

Whether you live with the condition or are a relative, you have a voice regarding your main concerns within the realm of epilepsy.

We do not believe that extensive connections or public recognition are necessary to make a difference as an advocate for the cause. Individuals, just like you and us, can exert significant influence on our community.

It is not necessarily about making grand gestures. It can simply be about:

  • Getting informed;
  • Questioning;
  • Providing adequate information;
  • Commenting;
  • Sharing our posts;
  • Wearing lavender on the upcoming March 26 to mark Lavender Day.

Getting involved together and taking our place fosters solidarity and brings about social change.

We firmly believe that you have the power to take your rightful place. This means knowing your rights, needs, and interests, and asserting them.

1% of the population is affected by epilepsy. For the province of Quebec, this means more than 90,000 people living with the condition.

This figure does not include family, co-workers, and school staff, who also need support and information.

Despite our differences, it is possible to bring us closer together to share our stories and dare to speak out collectively to advance the cause of epilepsy!
